The successful FutureSMART event series is associated with Smart networks development in UK Water.

So far over 140 organisations have participated in the series.

The events are very well attended with participation of the majority of UK water companies and diverse supply chain in the series so far.

The goal of the workshop:

FutureSMART events are in the the form of an ‘ideaLAB’, an open and interactive workshops designed by theteam at +ADD to facilitate sharing of ideas and latest thinking.

As with all of these to date, we are seeking to uncover shared challengers and opportunities for collaboration on innovation programmes. There are several examples of resultant initiatives in UK Water.

The event will see development of key approaches to forming innovation partnerships and new business models that enable scaling beyond ‘proof of concepts’, debate pro’s and con’s and openly explore different approaches to enabling ideal solutions.

SWIG joint innovation workshop

SENSOR innovation in UK WATER

joint innovation workshop with

SWIG - Sensors in water group

(November 6th/ LJMU UK)

About the event:

The event offered the opportunity exchange ideas and opportunity and to build consortia to meet current challenges.

Our goal in collaborating is to support the community in exploring opportunities and enabling possibilities. Our ambition is to support future collaborations develop.

This workshop aims to address challenges related to water sensors as identified by the water industry.

Morning session – Technical innovation
This session focused on new technology being developed to respond to sensing challenges in water that have been identified by water companies. In particular new technologies that offer better information for the user, for example new cost effective methods for measurement of turbidity and innovative methods of data fusion and analytics, also achieving lab quality analysis in networks.

Afternoon session – Innovation in business models
Run by the ADD team, the session included presentations that focus on developing new methods of working such as methods of sharing data, innovative costing models, tools for planning sensor deployment, costing models and overcoming resistance to change.

+ADD Funding

Our team explored support for potential innovative developments and initiatives. Specialists in funding development were present to help explore opportunities.

Some key questions we will be exploring:

  • What are the barriers to adoption of sensors in water networks?

  • What are the key domains for sensor applications in the water industry?

  • What are the challenges to deployment of sensors in these fields of application?

  • Why are some sensors so expensive and impractical to deploy?

  • What are the priorities for water industry sensor developments?

  • Can we disrupt typical sensor development processes?

  • How can we accelerate key sensor development priorities?

  • What consortia, funding and support can be provided to establish new development initiaitives?

Futuresmart 3:

Customer engagement and service innovation futures in UK water

18th September

Runway East, Central London

The third in a series of interactive workshops looking at the impact of smart meter rollout on the UK water industry.

This event focusses on potential for innovative changes to customer engagement and service design.

THE CMEX Challenge

diversity.jpg

C-MeX (Customer Measure of Experience) is a process used by OfWat (The water industry regulatory body), to measure water utility customer satisfaction. A change to the processes used have formed a new commercial opportunity for creative and innovative solutions.

Sponsored by South East Water the initiative will seek out new solutions through an applied design sprint and hack aimed at prototyping new and innovative means to engage utility customers and develop both the quality and value of engagements.

The event provides a variety of opportunities to engage and commercial potential for those willing to collaborate and build solutions the water utility can invest in.

There are a number of ways to participate. Please note, spaces are limited.

Realising Smart Meter Networks

smart meters…service realisation and procurement

FutureSMART 2 was an event focussing on realisation of smart metering programmes in the uk water sector

Moving beyond selection of hardware there are so many drivers and factors to consider in HOW to deliver data value and procure smart metering it can be challenging to develop policy and principal strategy.

This one day ideaLAB explored the different models for procuring and realising smart meter services with expert input from diverse speakers.

The goal of the day was to explore different supply and service models and their pro’s and con’s in the context of the UK.

The event was held at the Future Cities Catapult in London in May 2019 and is was free to attend. The event was attended by over 60 organisation including 11 UK water companies.

NETWORK SECURITY - FUTURE COMPLIANCE

UNPACKING THE CHALLENGE AND

DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE INITIATIVES AT IF19

NGN.png

Some key areas we will be exploring include:

  • What is the ‘cyber-attack reality’ for utilities and the changing threats to our networks?

  • What are the security ‘framework of principles’ and where are the biggest areas for development and improvement?

  • How are we going to meet new cyber security directives for infrastructure?

  • What are the levels of threat and key challenges we face in different aspects of network operations?

  • Which areas do we need to develop to meet the new framework requirements?

  • How can we best create risk profiles for different assets and networks?

  • How can we go about defining the risk of changing asset interconnectivity?

  • Does IOT adoption make utility networks more vulnerable?  How do we tackle associated topical issues such as:

    • Remote device patching

    • Threats to industrial control systems

    • The rise of indiscriminate cyber attacks

  • Many attacks start with a human error – such as a phishing attacks.  How do we enhance cyber security understanding, processes, skills and culture?

Picture4.png

‘Daily Dash’ - Security Futures / 9th July

As part of Northumbrian Water’s IF19 festival we are taking a deep dive into how we can improve cyber-security.

All utilities and infrastructure operators are moving towards smart network futures with more connectivity.

Cyber and information security are increasingly crucial issues for businesses and utility network operators are no exception.

These changes mean that the way we protect our networks must change too.  We will face increasingly sophisticated threats in the years ahead and innovation will be vital to preserve and enhance both our physical and cyber security.  A new process (established in July 18) has seen utilities undertaking baseline reviews to establish which areas need attention.

Our focus on the day is to define key challenges we face now and in the medium-term future, which could be supported by different and collaborative thinking.  Specifically, NGN are seeking to define initiatives they can further develop.
